The dominion of Sikkim was oriented by the Namgyal dynasty during the seventeenth century that was headed by a Buddhist priest-king known as Chogyal. In 1890 it emerged as a principality less than British Indian rule. Post-1947 Sikkim sustained its protectorate stature beneath the Republic of India.
